UP Pep Squad wins silver and bronze medals
at the Cheerleading World Championships (CWC) 2015

The UP Pep Squad/Team Philippines won a silver medal and two bronze medals at the 8th Cheerleading World Championships 2015 held on Nov. 21-22 in Berlin. The team won the silver medal for the Cheer - All Female category, while the two bronze medals were for the Cheerleading Doubles and Small Groups Mixed categories.

UPAA Germany e.V. welcomes UP Pep Squad in Berlin

The UP Pep Squad was welcomed today by the UPAA Germany Vice-president Caguioa-Mönnich at the Berlin Tegel Airport. They will compete on the weekend at the 8th IFC Cheerleading World Championships in Berlin. Among them are their head coach, Prof. Lalaine Perena; the head of the Philippine Federation, Mr. Evan Alvia and Ms. Abby Alvia; and the pep squad´s faculty adviser, Prof. Eloisa May Hernandez.

UPAA Germany e.V. presents Vincent Valiente on his First Vocal Recital
2015 Sept. 5 (Saturday, 5pm - 6pm) A Vocal Recital by Vincent Valiente, tenor, with Kazuhiro Shigematsu, piano, was presented by the association at the Gemeindesaal der Heilig-Geist-Kirche in Berlin last September 5 at 5pm. The recital had two parts: European classical music from the 16th century to the 19th century by Caccini, Gluck, Bellini, Handel, and Mozart; and Philippine classical music in the last two centuries by Zubiri, Santiago, de Guzman, and Fuentes. After the recital, a farewell party was held for Vincent Valiente who will study for a year at the University of Edinburgh. More info and photos here. |
1st UPAA Germany e.V. General Assembly in 2015

The GA was held at Kaiser-Friedrichstr. 33, 10627 Berlin in K. Caguioa-Mönnich´s apartment with 14 attendees including two board members plus the president online through skype. After the GA, a BBQ/socials was hosted by J. Lozano-Kühne at their residence in Glienicke. More photos here.

DAYAW. Filipino-inspired POP-up kitchen
2015 June 24 (Wednesday, 7pm - 10:30pm)
Markthalle Neun, Eisenbahnstrasse 42/43 - Pücklerstrasse 34, 10997 Berlin
The tickets to the launching of the Dayaw Filipino-inspired Pop-up Kitchen was sold-out the night just before the event. There were around 120 persons including the cooks, the volunteers/usherettes, the musicians, the journalists including those from ABS-CBN, and our very own Ambassador Melita Sta.Maria-Thomeczek with some other diplomats from the Philippine Embassy Berlin.
It was a successful meal/performance designed by Pepe Dayaw, curated by Kathrin Kuna in partnership with the Markthalle Neun and in cooperation with the Philippine Embassy - Berlin with the volunteer participation of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association e.V.
The menu included kare-kare, kinilaw, pisbol (fishball), gazpacho, sinigang, adobo-kamatis-atsara, champorado topped with crispy anchovy tempura, and puto bumbong.
The event was also lined up with performances from Filipino musicians - singer-songwriters Mishka Adams and Isa Tabasuares, couple Jomar and Myls Rubio, and a brazilian singer Danny. Filipino songs like Ugoy ng Duyan were sung. As a closing, everyone sang Bato sa Buhangin, with lyrics distributed to the guests.

UPAA members join the Nike 10KM Berlin
2015 June 20 (Saturday, 9pm - 11pm) Lynda Sylvester and Krisanta Caguioa-Mönnich were among the 10,000 runners of the Berlin 10KM of the Run Nike Women Series. The start and finish line was at the race village in the Tempelhofer Feld. More photos here. |

Filipino Community Dialogue with the Embassy

UPAA-Germany e.V. joined the other Filipino organizations from all over the country in a whole-day event at the embassy with the Ribbon-cutting/Opening of the Carthographic Exhibit (www.imoa.ph/imoawebexhibit), Lecture on the South China Sea Dispute by Justice Antonio T. Carpio, open forum, and other talks and announcements from the embassy officials particularly the new Ambassador, Ms. Melita S. Sta.Maria-Thomeczek, and organization heads.

The BalikPhD Roadshow in Berlin

Dr. Gisela Padilla-Concepcion, Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University of the Philippines (UP) System, delivered a presentation at the Philippine Embassy in Berlin on the current programs of UP encouraging foreign- trained Filipinos to be part of the internationalisation and enhancement of UP’s educational and research activities. Academicians and other interested participants from different parts of Germany attended the BalikPhD seminar which was co-hosted by the University of the Philippines Alumni Association Germany e.V. (UPAA Germany), The Filipino Students, Alumni and Academics in Germany (FSAAG) and the Philippine Embassy in Berlin.
The BalikPhD program which offers relocation package and start-up research grant for balikbayan experts has been discussed in the seminar. UP is inviting applicants from all fields, especially those who can serve best the interests of the nation towards nation-building. Other programs and mechanisms of financial support for continued research productivity, continued foreign training, participation in international conferences, hosting of international meetings, the visiting professor program, and others programs for students, researchers and faculty exchange were also discussed.
