Of Lives and Labels - The First Reel: Philippine Film Festival in Berlin
12 November 2019 Held on November 6-10, 2019, The First Reel is a community-oriented platform for Filipino creatives in the Philippines and abroad who want to examine the forces that shape the Filipino experience through various artistic means. Their flagship project is a non-profit film festival organized by founder Lola Abrera and curated by Trinka Lat. It is the first festival of Filipino films in Berlin that features the works of both established and independent Filipino filmmakers. Its post-screening events include forums and dialogues that encourage filmmakers to interact with the global community. November 10, 2019, was the night of the screening of "Documented", by Jose Antonio Vargas, after which the festival hosted "Of Lives and Language: A Roundtable on Semantics and the power of words in relation to the migrant identity." On this night, UPAA Germany sold "Studentenfutter" (a.k.a. snacks, but Filipino and with more variety!), the profits of which went to the UPAA Scholarship Fund. |
